Determination of meteor showers on other planets using comet ephemerides

چکیده

Meteor showers on the Earth occur at well known times, and are associated with the decay of comets or other minor bodies whose orbital paths pass close to the Earth’s trajectory. On the surface, determining the closest proximity of two orbital paths appears to be a computationally intensive procedure. This paper describes a simple geometric method for determining the proximity between the orbital paths of two bodies (i.e., a comet and a planet) in the solar system from the known ephemerides of the objects. The method is used to determine whether or not meteor showers on other planets in the solar system could be associated with any of 250 known comets. Leonid Dust Trail Theories

At the end of the 19th century, Irish astronomers Johnstone Stoney and A.M.W. Downing showed in principle how to predict meteor storms. Their work and later developments applying similar ideas are reviewed here. The theories essentially involve determining the dynamical behavior of dust trails, which are narrow, dense structures within a broader stream. The formation of dust trails and the main...

A new method to predict meteor showers II. Application to the Leonids

Our model of meteor shower forecasting (described in Paper I) is applied to the Leonid shower. This model is based on the “dirty snowball” model of comets, and on heavy numerical simulation of the generation and evolution of meteoroid streams. The amount of dust emitted by comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle is computed. A statistical weight is associated to each simulated particle. This weight represents ...

MAVEN IUVS observations of the aftermath of the Comet Siding Spring meteor shower on Mars

We report the detection of intense emission from magnesium and iron in Mars’ atmosphere caused by a meteor shower following Comet Siding Spring’s close encounter with Mars. The observations weremade with the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph, a remote sensing instrument on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft orbiting Mars. Ionized magnesium caused the brightest emission from th...

The orbital elements of a meteoroid after its ejection from a comet

This article examines the changes in the orbital elements of particles ejected from the nucleus of an active comet. We extend the work of Plavec (1957) to include changes in all the orbital elements resulting from the ejection process. We take into account the constraints that must be met before a meteoroid particle can be observed as a meteor. In addition we constrain particle ejection to take ...

An analysis of Bordeaux meridian transit circle observations of planets and satellites (1997-2007)

Context. Meridian transit circle observations of the planets and their satellites are regularly performed for ephemerides improvement. Some have been made in Bordeaux observatory during the period 1997-2007. Aims. This paper presents these observations and makes an analysis of the data in order to determine the accuracy of the observations, their interest for dynamical purpose and a comparison ...
